In Clark, New Jersey, patients of Dr. Joseph Preziosi Jr., D.M.D. can turn to our office as a skilled and dependable source for dental implants, and we encourage anyone with missing teeth – even just one – to consult with us about the option for implants. As your dentist in Clark we want to educate our patients about this opportunity and help any candidate for dental implants to get the care they need.
Who is a Candidate for Dental Implants?
Dental implants, for those who don’t know, are a three-part device that is used to replace a missing tooth. It is not like a denture or bridge, but is actually implanted into the gum and bone. It uses a shaft that is inserted into the tissue. The top of the shaft features an abutment that will eventually secure a dental crown. These three pieces work together to provide you with a functional replacement to a tooth, and will preserve your bite, and prevent the loss of gum and bone tissue.
Naturally, implant dentistry requires skill and expertise, and Dr. Preziosi is happy to meet with patients to help them determine if they are a candidate for dental implants in our office. To qualify as a candidate for dental implants, you must have more than just a missing tooth.
Candidates for Dental Implants Need the Following:
- Have healthy teeth and gums without any periodontal disease or other issues
- Have the appropriate amount of bone density to support the actual implant
- Have no untreated health issues such as an autoimmune disease or diabetes
- Do not use certain medications (we will review those with you)
- Accept that you may need treatments that will then qualify you for implant dentistry, such as bone grafts and recovery
- Quit smoking if you are currently a smoker as this can interfere with healing
Once you meet the criteria outlined above, it is likely that you are a good candidate for implants. While they are a good answer for a single or individual missing teeth, they can also be used to secure partial and full dentures as well as bridges.
