Am I a Candidate for Teeth Whitening?
Dr. Joseph Preziosi Jr., D.M.D. in Clark, New Jersey encourages our patients to consider if they are a candidate for teeth whitening. This is because teeth whitening is the most conservative, fast, and effective way to boost the appearance of a healthy smile.
Of course, not everyone can enjoy tooth whitening as a primary form of cosmetic dentistry. After all, those with very sensitive teeth, with active gum or periodontal disease, oral cancer, or with thin or worn down enamel will be unable to qualify as a candidate for teeth whitening. This is a very limited range of people, though, and that means that almost anyone is a candidate for teeth whitening, but we want to go back for a moment…
Did you see that you must have healthy gums in order to use it? In our office, we will not encourage a patient to enjoy tooth whitening unless their teeth and gums are in the best health possible. There are far too many greater issues that can improve the look of the smile, and we always begin any cosmetic treatment on a foundation of optimal oral health.
So, if you are eager to become a candidate for teeth whitening, be sure you book a regular exam and cleaning. At that time, we can discuss your cosmetic goals with you and address any issues that might prevent you from moving forward with your plans. Once any gum disease, tooth decay or restorative issues are addressed, we can then do the whitening.
Who Is a Candidate for Teeth Whitening?
The strongest candidates for the treatment are those who have lifestyle habits that lead to ongoing and worsening staining, such as smokers and those who consume staining beverages like coffee, tea, cola or red wine and juice. However, certain medications, childhood exposure to high levels of fluoride, and the passage of time can also make you a good candidate for tooth whitening.
Treatment is fast and painless, taking less than one hour in our office. We can also provide take-home solutions to help you maintain the good results of the professional treatment. It is even better if you abstain from habits that may have caused staining. Some patients may need several visits to get the best results, but then these results last for months!
If staining is too deep or permanent, Dr. Preziosi Jr. may suggest dental veneers or bonding.
